The Home Office has reimbursed another £1.28m to Lancashire Constabulary for the costs of policing Cuadrilla’s fracking site at Preston New Road.

The site near Blackpool saw near-daily protests when work began in January 2017 until fracking was suspended after earth tremors in August 2019.

The county’s police and crime commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, tweeted:

“Grateful for the reimbursement from @ukhomeoffice of £1.28m for costs associated with the policing of the Preston New Road fracking site. This is after ongoing lobbying not just from myself but also cross-party support from #Lancashire MPs.

“Positive news for #Lancashire residents who should be reassured that money is being returned and will now be used for the benefit of the wider police service in the county.”

Mr Grunshaw said the police operation, known as Operation Manilla, had cost Lancashire Constabulary almost £13m until it was disbanded in December 2019.

The Home Office had previously paid £5.8m towards policing between 2017 and 2019. The latest funding is for the financial year 2019-2020.

Permission for fracking at Preston New Road was given by the then local government secretary, Sajid Javid, overturning a refusal by Lancashire County Council.

Mr Grunshaw has previously said:

“The decision to frack in our county was borne in Whitehall after the judgement made by Lancashire County Council was overturned. The expectation on Lancashire Constabulary to cover the costs of this decision was not a fair deal so I am pleased this has been recognised and additional costs for this operation are being met.”
