Houston tow truck driver killed after wrecker stolen
HOUSTON, TX — Police say a tow truck driver in Houston whose wrecker was stolen moments after unloading a repossessed car was killed when the alleged thief ran him over. Houston assistant police chief James Jones said Friday the suspected thief ultimately crashed the tow truck in neighboring Sugar Land and was arrested. Authorities didn’t immediately release his name or charges. Tito Moczygemba said he was helping the tow truck owner process a repossessed Kia when someone climbed in the wrecker and drove off. He told the Houston Chronicle the suspected thief threw the truck in reverse and pinned the owner when he tried confronting him.
Semi-truck driver killed after running off the road, crashing into creek
YUKON, Okla. — A semi-truck driver is dead after veering off the road and crashing into a creek. Early Thursday morning, emergency crews were called to Piedmont Rd. between Wilshire and Wagner, in Yukon. “Approximately 1 a.m. we got a call about a vehicle that had crashed and driven off the roadway,” Major Mitch Hoskins, with the Yukon Police Department, said. “Our preliminary investigation, once officers got on scene here, it’s a tractor-trailer loaded with fracking sand that apparently has veered off the roadway.” The driver was trapped inside as the truck sank into the creek, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Salisbury Truck Driver Killed at Weigh Station in Montgomery County
HYATTSTOWN, Md. – Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a tractor-trailer driver from Salisbury that occurred Friday morning in Montgomery County. Police have identified the driver as 58-year-old James Lee Hobbs. According to MSP, at around 11:30 am, a trooper with the commercial vehicle enforcement division at the Hyattstown weigh station placed Hobbs’ tractor-trailer out of service for brake violations. A preliminary investigation indicates Hobbs was trying to make the necessary brake adjustments under the truck when it rolled back and over him. Hobbs died on the scene.
Delivery truck driver killed west of Oakridge
OAKRIDGE, OR — The driver of a St. Vincent de Paul delivery truck was killed on Thursday in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 58, according to Oregon State Police. Robert Bieler, 81, of La Pine was traveling east on Highway 58 about two miles west of Oakridge about 12:05 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a slight left curve, state police said. The 2006 GMC delivery truck went off the highway, down an embankment, across a side road and collided with a large oak tree. Bieler was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.
Construction worker dies in fall at site along I-95
DARIEN, Conn. (AP) — – A worker has died after falling from scaffolding at a construction site along Interstate 95 in Darien. Police say the man lost his footing and fell 20 feet on Thursday while doing surface work on a storage facility. The Greenwich Time reports there is no suspicion of foul play. The man’s identity was not released.
Contract worker dies at Belle Chasse refinery
Belle Chasse, LA — A contractor working at the Phillips 66 Alliance Refinery near Belle Chasse died this week, and emergency personnel are expected to retrieve the body Saturday evening (July 7) following a shutdown of the facility, according to the company. [The worker’s name was Jerome Matthews.] Reuters first reported news of the death Friday, attributing the information to “trade sources.” Its report said the worker fell into a wastewater plant. Nuss said the incident happened around 9:30 Wednesday night and involved an employee of HydroChemPSC who was working in a cooling tower. It triggered an emergency shutdown, which Nuss said can take least 48 hours in order for the affected portion of the refinery to be safe for emergency workers to reach.
One killed, one injured in industrial accident in Porter
Porter, TX —One man was killed and another injured after authorities say a piece of a side wall of an elevated water tower under construction fell on top of a construction crew Friday morning. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office along with fire and EMS were called to the scene of an industrial accident on Water Well Road and Loop 494 in Porter. “Constructions crews were assembling a water well when a piece of side wall being installed broke free and landed on the construction crew inside the well,” MCSO reported. Two employees were not injured, one seriously injured and one male is reportedly deceased.
Gas station worker killed when driver hits pump, sparks fire in western Pa.
RAYNE, PA — Authorities say a drunken driver crashed into a pump at a Pennsylvania gas station, sparking a fire that killed an employee who became trapped inside the burning service station building. The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Pikel’s Top Tier Fuels in Rayne, about 70 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. State police say two men were in a car that hopped a curb, struck at least one fuel pump and crashed into an auto repair building. Fire soon engulfed the car and building, trapping 52-year-old Melissa Ann Myers inside. Her body was found by emergency responders.
Lightning strike kills construction worker, injures another while working on roof of KC home
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A lightning strike killed a construction worker and injured another Thursday as they were working on the roof of a Kansas City home. It was tough to watch, crews said. Saul Mendoza is still shaken up after he watched it all unfold. “We were working on the house. We went up and heard from afar, like 4 miles away, was something like lightning,” he said. Two people were taken to the hospital, and one later died, after falling off a home’s roof when lightning struck it. Over the phone, Mendoza described what happened Thursday afternoon as he and the rest of a construction crew worked on a KCMO house. He said lightning seemed to come out of nowhere and hit Leonel Sanchez. “We only saw where (it) hit him in the back and launched him back, and we ran cause we didn’t know what to do. We thought another one would hit,” Mendoza said. Sanchez fell off the roof and landed on the porch below.
Construction Worker Dies After Being Pulled From Hole
Dallas, TX — A construction worker who was pulled from 20-30 foot hole in Dallas has died. Dallas Fire-Rescue was called out to a work site at the intersection of Singleton Boulevard and Sea Harbor Road after two men working in the hole passed out from sewer gases after the line they were working on ruptured. The firefighters were able to pull the men out before the Urban Search and Rescue team arrived. Firefighters began to perform CPR on one of the workers, officials said. Both men were transported to the hospital along with another worker that was not in the hole. The identity of the deceased worker has not been disclosed.
NY Country Club Worker Dies After Tree Pins Him to Tractor
QUEENSBURY, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a 55-year-old country club worker pinned to his tractor seat by a tree he was hauling has died. The Warren County Sheriff’s office says Raymond H. Kilmartin Jr. was dumping debris with a tractor on Wednesday at Hiland Park Country Club in Queensbury, New York when the load shifted and the tree pinned his upper body to the seat. A nearby homeowner heard him shouting for help, but had trouble locating Kilmartin through the thick tree line. A bystander and employees at country club near the southern edge of the Adirondacks found Kilmartin and lifted the tree from his body. He was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where he died.
Truck driver killed after colliding with train on rural road
ASHLAND, Neb. — A truck driver is dead after a train struck his vehicle near Ashland Tuesday morning, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. The driver has been identified as Shawn Sandrin, 57, of Lincoln. Sandrin was driving a yellow International model 7000 straight truck northbound into the Horseshoe Lake area when he failed to stop and yield at a stop sign prior to the railroad crossing, Cass County officials said. An oncoming BNSF train with 110 cars was traveling west at 50 mph. The emergency brakes were used before impact. A Cass County Deputy pronounced Sandrin dead at the scene.
Recent Immigrant Killed on Job at Gas Station in Herndon
Herndon, VA — A man working as a clerk at a gas station in Herndon, Virginia, was killed on the job early Wednesday, and police have arrested the suspect. Resham Bajgain was killed as he worked the overnight shift at a Sunoco station in the 13300 block of Franklin Farm Road. The 40-year-old husband and father worked two jobs and lived in Herndon, friends said. Bajgain worked part-time at the Sunoco and full-time at a Wegmans grocery store, friends told News4. He was originally from Nepal and moved to the United States less than a year ago with his 5-year-old daughter, to reunite with his wife. 7-Eleven, which manages the convenience store portion of the gas station, sent the company’s condolences. “The safety and well-being of our 7-Eleven employees and customers is of utmost importance. Our hearts are with the victim and their family. We are gathering information and working with local law enforcement,” 7-Eleven, Inc. said in a statement.
Asphalt Machine Falls On Worker Outside Tulsa Marriott Hotel
TULSA, Oklahoma – Tulsa rescue crews responded to a parking lot near 71st and Lewis after a person was killed in a construction-related accident. The family of Rick Deeter said he served in the Marines and was the oldest of four brothers. They said he was a tough man, yet soft, and that he loved motorcycles. Deeter was killed while working in a parking lot at 71st and Wheeling next to the Marriott hotel. Witnesses said workers were trying to drive an asphalt paver onto a flatbed when it tipped over and on top of Deeter.
Sanitation Worker Dies After Being Struck by Trash Bin
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a sanitation worker was killed when he was struck by a falling trash bin in western Pennsylvania. Cambria County Coroner Jeffrey Lees says 19-year-old Barry Miller of Summerhill was part of a three-person crew from Pro Disposal trying to empty a trash bin shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday outside the Alternative Community Resource Program in Brownstown. Lees said Miller was next to the crew’s truck operating a hydraulic system to hoist the container when the pulley slipped off as the contents were being emptied. The bin struck Miller, briefly pinned him against the vehicle. He died in the intensive care unit at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown just before 11 a.m. Monday.
WORKER DIES, ANOTHER CRITICALLY WOUNDED AFTER SHOOTING OUTSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas — Police in suburban Kansas City say a suspect has been taken into custody in a Tuesday morning crime spree that spanned three scenes and left a contract worker at a local elementary school dead. In the first incident, two workers outside Sunrise Point Elementary school in Overland Park were shot and wounded, Overland Police public information officer John Lacy told CBS News. School is out of session and no students were at the school at the time of the shooting, around 9 a.m., reports CBS affiliate KCTV. One of the wounded contractors later died, Overland Park police said. The other remains in critical condition. Police say the two men were part of a group of up to six workers in the area and that the suspect in the case was a fellow contractor, police say. The workers had been at the school renovating a playground, and the shooting happened after some kind of argument, KCTV reports.
Worker dies after fall at construction site in Inman
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said a 24-year-old man died after he reportedly fell at a construction site on Monday in Inman. According to coroner’s office news release, Joseph Robert Henley, of Spartanburg, fell at a construction site on 4th Street. Henley was then taken to Spartanburg Medical Center, where he died on Tuesday.
Man dies after falling from tree in Savannah
Savannah, GA — A man died after falling from a tree on Monday. John Gallovitch, 39, was working to remove limbs from a tree near the intersection of DeLesseps Avenue and Puerto Rico Street, police spokeswoman Keturah Greene said. Greene said Savannah police responded to the scene around 11:25 a.m. Gallovitch worked for Expert Tree Services, Greene said.
